The International IoT conference is the leading event of IFIP on research, innovation and application on Internet of Things. This year in its 5th edition hosted at the KIT Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Since IoT is inherently multidisciplinary, the conference is covering a wide range of topics.

The areas of interest range from communication network protocols and embedded systems to data analytics and machine learning algorithms, but also considering social, legal, ethical, and economic aspects.

All of these aspects are having the objective of enabling a vast array of services in areas like e-health, mobility, energy, manufacturing, smart cities, and agriculture, just to cite a few examples. IoT deployment needs also to take into consideration the security, privacy, and social aspects of networking, which need to be fully investigated to ensure real added value for IoT users.

The IFIP IoT Conferences address this wide variety of topics. Papers show technical advancements, research on major questions, innovation, pilot site results and policy issues. Perspectives are from researchers, users, user organizations, ICT industry, authorities, and regulators.

Title - Back to square two? on the challenges of securing the Internet of Things.

Prof. Sandro Etalle, Eindhoven University of Technology

Subtitle: In this talk, Sandro Etalle will point out some of the open challenges we are facing in securing IoT devices, and some of the research directions that are being pursued to alleviate them.

Bio: Sandro Etalle is full professor and head of the Security group at the TU Eindhoven. He earned his MSc degree at the University of Padova and his PhD at the University of Amsterdam. His research focuses mainly on usable security monitoring, with an emphasis on industrial IoT, a topic that he tackled both in the academic and in the enterprise setting. Etalle is the scientific director of the NWA program INTERSECT, on security of IoT systems, he has been leader of several national and EU projects, and program chair of several international conferences. Before switching to the academic career, he was co-founder of two Italian technology companies; TecLogic and ICON ( In 2009, Etalle founded SecurityMatters ( together with PhD students D. Bolzoni and E. Zambon. At SecurityMatters Etalle served as CEO for over 4 years and as Chairman of the Board until the exit.

Title - Wearable Computing : The computers closer to your body.

Prof. Michael Biegl, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Abstract: Wearable computing is about bringing the computer closer to your body. The lecture highlights some existing, but above all current technological developments. This includes sensing, actuation technologies as well as communication and systems aspects of wearable technology and open problems, e.g. regarding privacy.

Bio: Michael Beigl is professor for Pervasive Computing Systems at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and head of the TECO research lab. He obtained both his M.Sc. and Ph.D at the University of Karlsruhe (now KIT). Previously he was professor at the TU Braunschweig from 2006-2010, visiting associate professor at Hide Tokuda Labs, Keio University, Japan in 2005 and research director of the TECO, University of Karlsruhe, Germany from 2001-2005. He is heading the national competence center for Big Data AI, the Smart Data Innovation Lab (SDIL) and the state competence center for Big Data AI in Baden-Württemberg, the Smart Data Solution Center (SDSC-BW) since 2014. His research interests evolve around blending human with computing, with specific interest In Human-Computer Interaction, sensing systems and blending Artificial and Human Intelligence in wearable computers. Panel Session - AI in IoT

In the panel session we will address the use of AI in the domain of IoT.

IoT is helping in capturing a tremendous amount of data from multiple sources. However, wrapping around the multitude of data coming from many IoT devices, makes it complex to collect, process, and analyze the data.

The convergence of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and IoT can offer a solution to those challenges, and by such it can redefine the way industries, business, and economies functions. IoT artificial intelligence leads to a broad range of benefits for companies and consumers like proactive intervention, personalized experience, and intelligent automation. But IoT itself can also benefit from AI by having its performance being optimized using the predictions made by AI on a changing environment. By implementing AI “at the edge”, the data can be analyzed before sending the insights to other devices. As such, it brings scalability and responsiveness. However, to make this all happen, there are quite some challenges and concerns. This panel will address the opportunities and challenges by presenting some propositions that will be discussed by them and the audience. The panel members are:
